There Are No Secrets to Building a Notary Business

One phrase I would love to see less of in the notary industry is:

“Come learn the secrets to building a successful notary business.”

Another one?

“Here’s what nobody ever tells you.”

I understand why people use these phrases. They are attention-grabbing. They make people curious. They suggest that there is some hidden piece of information that could change everything for someone trying to build their business.

But here is the truth: in today’s world, very little is actually hidden.

Between YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook groups, notary forums, books, classes, webinars, conferences, memberships, and mentorship programs, information is everywhere. People are sharing advice. People are teaching. People are selling education. People are giving away tips. People are talking openly about what has worked for them and what has not.

There are very few true “secrets” left.

That does not mean every piece of information is equally valuable. It does not mean every teacher is reputable. It does not mean every course, book, or class is worth your time or money. And it certainly does not mean you should stop learning.

Education matters. Training matters. Professional development matters. Learning from experienced, reputable, ethical people can absolutely help you avoid mistakes, build confidence, improve your skills, and shorten your learning curve.

But learning something valuable is not the same as being handed a secret.

Those are two very different things.

A Notary Business Is Still a Business

Sometimes in the notary world, we make business-building sound more mysterious than it really is.

Owning and operating a notary business is still owning and operating a business.

The fundamentals are not unique to notaries. They are the same principles that apply to many service-based businesses.

You need a plan.

You need to understand your market.

You need to know your craft.

You need to provide excellent customer service.

You need to communicate clearly.

You need to be accessible and responsive.

You need to price your services fairly.

You need to market consistently.

You need to build relationships.

You need to protect your reputation.

You need to follow through.

You need to keep learning.

None of these things are secrets. They are business basics.

And while they may not sound as exciting as “six-figure secrets” or “hidden strategies nobody tells you,” they are usually the things that make the biggest difference.

Success Is Not Instant

One of the most frustrating messages I see in this industry is the suggestion that success should happen quickly if you just know the right trick, buy the right course, or follow the right formula.

That is not how most businesses work.

Success is rarely instant. It is usually built slowly through consistency, skill, professionalism, patience, and reputation.

It is returning phone calls.

It is answering emails.

It is showing up on time.

It is knowing what you are legally allowed to do and what you are not.

It is treating people well.

It is understanding your documents.

It is admitting when you need more education.

It is marketing even when you are busy.

It is following up without being pushy.

It is doing the work even when the excitement wears off.

That is not glamorous, but it is real.

Good Education Still Has Value

I want to be very clear: this is not an argument against education.

Quite the opposite.

Notaries should seek education. They should take classes. They should read. They should attend webinars and conferences. They should follow people they trust. They should learn from those who have experience, integrity, and a strong understanding of the industry.

Good education can absolutely be worth paying for.

A good class can help you understand your responsibilities. A good mentor can help you avoid common mistakes. A good book can give you structure. A good training program can help you feel more confident and prepared.

But good education should not have to be marketed as if it contains magical secrets.

There is a difference between saying:

“I can teach you something valuable.”

And saying:

“I know something nobody else will tell you.”

The first one is honest.

The second one often plays on fear, insecurity, or the belief that success is being kept from you.

Your Success Is Not Hidden Behind a Paywall

One of the most important things newer notaries need to understand is this:

Your success is not being hidden from you.

It is not locked away behind one person’s course, one secret strategy, one perfect script, or one magic list.

Can those things help? Sometimes.

Can they give you ideas, structure, and direction? Absolutely.

But they are not a substitute for building a solid business.

At the end of the day, a successful notary business is built on the same foundation as many other successful businesses: professionalism, knowledge, consistency, service, relationships, and trust.

You do not need to chase every “secret.”

You need to become good at what you do, understand the business you are building, and keep showing up with integrity.

The Bottom Line

By all means, invest in yourself.

Take the class. Read the book. Attend the webinar. Join the group. Hire the coach. Learn from people who are reputable, ethical, experienced, and transparent.

But do not believe that success is being hidden from you.

It is not hidden.

It is built.
